If you have never visited a French vineyard, Châteauneuf-du-Pape should be your first stop! First, the wines are truly exceptional. Second, the mysteries of terroirs reveal themselves in the open air and finally the whole area is packed with unforgettable historical buildings.
Although the vines were first introduced in the region by the ancient Greeks and the Romans 2 milleniums ago, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards gained recognition with the arrival of the Roman Catholic Popes in the neighboring city of Avignon, in 1309. The popes chose Châteauneuf to build their summer residence. this is when winemaking seriously expanded in the area.
The wine debutants can easily apprehend the diversity of the Châteauneuf terroirs: archetypal peebles in some areas, lime and clay soils in other parts, plateaux, slopes and valleys can be found around the village. The weather, cruelly hot in the summer and the frequent drying wind won't miss to impress you durably.
The pruning system in the vineyards is adapted to these harsh weather conditions: most vines are not trained along wires but are shaped in "Gobelet", to allow the shoots to fall back to the ground and protect the bunches from direct sun rays. Today, 13 varietals are allowed in the appellation, some of them so confidential that only a few specimens are still in production.
