Languedoc-Roussillon is the land of superlatives: largest volumes of wines produced in France, warmest climate, steepest vineyards, most contrasted production…
For generations, the wines of Languedoc-Roussillon have carried a terrible reputation: cheap red wines sold for a few dimes in 1 liter bottles to workers, sulfurous wines shipped at tight to quality regions in order to enhance the color of Bordeaux or Rhône wines… All these practices changed when the region was hit by a crisis caused by a drop in the consumption of cheap wines and the competition of new world wines.
In the 80's, a first revolution took place: low quality varietals such as Alicante were replaced by international grapes like Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah. The quality improved, but most of the production remained targeted towards low price markets. Over the last 20 years, a few pioneer winemakers have settled in the region, radically turning their back to the mass produced local wines for a terroir approach: carefully selected parcels, Burgundy or Bordeaux style vinifications (of red wines, of white wines), innovative packaging and marketing…
Today, things are still moving fast in the region, new comers start producing wine every day, organic farming is more significant, the quality and the prices keep growing.
Yet, Languedoc-Roussillon remains a superb value for money wines region. The other good news is the fact that the village and the appellations in the region seem to be gaining more recognition every day!
