Vinomaniac.tv visited the Domaine de La Bégude in the middle of Summer 2009, when the Côte d'Azur is usually packed with tourists from all over the world, who pile up on rocky beaches to get toasted by the sun of Provence.
Although La Bégude is perched right on the coast, on the hills above the town of Bandol, the small road that drives through the pine forest to the property was almost deserted that day. The only vehicles we could see were the red fire trucks on guard in the shade of the Austrian pines. When we finally reached the gates, we were under the impression we had reached a peaceful heaven, miles away from the mass tourism of the Côte.
Soledad Tari, the owner and active director of La Bégude took us for a tour of the domain in her antique Land Rover. The feel of isolation comes from the fact that the property is gigantic, she explained while driving the truck. It covers 500 ha of untouched garrigue, planted with shrubs, olive trees and wild herbs.
The vineyard only occupis 17 ha of the land, planted along the coastal slopes of the domain.
With such a location, isolated from the contamination of other vineyards and exposed to the sea breeze, the vines are farmed organically. The soils are so rocky that it seems unlikely that the vines manage to survive. Yet, the rustic mourvèdre, the king of Bandol grapes survives, giving exceptional red and rosé wines.
The Rosé 2008 is made with 55% of Mourvèdre, 35% of Grenache and 10% of Cinsault. Unlike the fashionable Côtes de Provence super light rosés wines, the Bandol Rosé 2007 from La Bégude reflects of the specific situation of the terroir: deep orange/ruby color, complex nose, intense and structured palate. The wine is made to age. With the years, it becomes more and more complex and smoky. It is a unique and fascinating experience that expands the conventional idea that most people have on rosé wines. La Bégude demonstrates that Bandol rosés can age, and match the solid dishes that may come to your imagination. Imagine this wine served with a fruit and lamb Moroccan tajine!

Oh how I loved this post. I snubbed my nose at Rose for a long time thinking it was liked the boxed zinfandel my mom use to drink. After becoming more knowledgable in wines, I started branching out. Last year I experimented with many roses. It doesn’t get extremely hot here in LA, but I do love it on a hot summer day. My favorite’s are the one Terry mentioned the Domaine Tempier and Domaine Ott that the Enchanted Garden mentioned. They are the two I drink the most. However, I’m looking forward to trying the other ones Terry mentioned from the other countries to compare how they taste to the Bandol region. There are several other inexpensive roses from France I love but the names are escaping me. It was great to learn about the process. I’m saving this post for my next trip to the wine shop.
