A few names trigger the imagination of all wine lovers. It is certainly the case for "Les Vignes de l'Enfant Jésus". Just the sound of it has all Burgundy wines lovers salivating.
Les Vignes de l'Enfant Jésus are located in the Beaune Les Grèves Premier Cru vineyards. Les Grèves is a "Climat", a specific Terroir of Bourgogne that gives rather intense and complex pinot noir wines.
Originally, this 4 ha plot of land was donated to the Carmelites of Beaune. According to the legend, one of the nuns from the Convent of Beaune predicted the birth of Louis XIV, although his mother, Queen Anne d'Autriche, was reputed sterile. The name has remained attached to the vineyards, even after Bouchard Père et Fils acquired the parcel during the French Revolution.
The slope is quite steep in the Grèves, the soil has a sandy quality that makes it especially draining. The Vignes de l'Enfant Jésus wines tend to be powerful yet elegant, silky yet fresh.
Bouchard Père et Fils is the largest Grands Crus (12 ha) and Premiers Crus (74 ha) owner of Burgundy. Since it was taken over by Joseph Henriot in 1995, the domain has considerably improved the viticulture and the cellar work. A new winery has recently been built, providing the winemaking team with a tool that matches the precise, rigorous style of the wines.
This Beaune Grèves Vignes de l'Enfant Jésus is very much in this line: precise, the austerity of the vintage softened by the delicate fresh red fruit notes. The depth of the wine, the quality of the terroir will fully express itself in a few years.
