Every once in a while, the luckiest wine lovers fall on undiscovered gems like the Domaine du Pourra wines in Séguret. In August 2009, after a lovely lunch on a terrace in the center of Gigondas with some South African vinomaniacs who were touring the Rhone, we undertook a vertical tasting of Gigondas 2007 at the "Caveau Municipal", a wine tasting facility opened by the town council, were one can taste almost all the wines of Gigondas.
Gigondas wines can be pretty dense in their youth, and after just a few wines we were all showing black lips and black teeth. So when we tasted Domaine du Pourra rather lighter wines, the elegance and the fruit came as a relief. All of us immediately fell for the wine. In 2 minutes, we were given the number of the wine maker, we gave a quick warning that we were coming and took off to Sablet, the next village to meet with Jean-Christian Mayordome, the owner and winemaker of the domain.
At our arrival, we were greeted by a smiling Jean-Christian. He was in a rush, he explained, because he is the only General Practitioner in the nearby village and he was about to birth a baby later that day! We took a tour of the winery, accompanied by the very informative comments of Jean-Christian. The tasting of his wines and his explanations concluded beautifully the visit. His Séguret and Gigondas vines are perched at the top of the Dentelles de Montmirail. It is impossible to use a tractor, so all the work is done by foot. The organically produced grapes are vinified with gentleness and great skills. As an MD, Jean-Christian perfectly understands how micro-organism live and develop in wine. His work with the natural oxidation of wines, the ridiculously small amounts of sulfites he manages to use totally reflect in this wine.
