It is a unique privilege and exclusive privilege! Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, General Manager of the top-notch "Maison" Bouchard Père et Fils (BPF) invited Vinomaniac.tv to spend a day in Beaune and film all the operations during harvest.
The day started with a visit of the antique cellars of the Château, a part of the domain offices that were built within the fortifications of the city of Beaune. 19th century bottles of Meursault and other great wines are carefully preserved under a layer of noble dust.
The real action started with a tour in the vineyards. 2009 is likely to become an exceptional vintage, so as expected the grapes were simply perfect: healthy, ripe, tasty and juicy! As Stéphane Follin-Arbelet explained, nature has rewarded a year long effort in the vineyards with exceptional grapes. During harvest, the challenge is to ensure that the quality of the grapes translates into the wine.
What is fascinating with Bouchard Père et Fils is the sense of order and sound judgement, in both the organization and the technical choices. In the vineyards, the grapes are cut and transported in small 13 kg crates. Without delay, the crates are transported to the state of the art winery the domain has built a few years ago in Savigny-lès-Beaune. The winery looks impressive, but simply because it is so carefully planned: the crates are emptied on sorting tables, the red grapes are then stemmed and fall by gravity into the fermenting wooden tanks located some 10 meters below.

The day continued with the tasting of an imposing line up of the domain's greatest wines. Reds and whites (in that order, the BPF signature!) reflect on the ambivalence of the domain's philosophy: modesty and discretion of the winemaking and pride of owning 100 ha of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. And this is exactly what one should expect from Bourgogne wines: skilled behind the scene winemaking to enhance the uniqueness of the terroirs. Mission accomplished.
