Provence: the cradle of vines
Established by the Phoenicians 2,600 years ago, then developed by the Romans in the 2nd century AD avt, the first vineyard in France is Provence.
As is the case in most French wine regions, the monks took over the vineyards in the Middle Ages by introducing the methodology and refining the methods of winemaking. In the 16th century the nobility acquired a good number of vineyards and contributed to their development.
In 1880, a little later than other French vineyards, the vineyards of Provence were hit hard by the invasion of the terrible aphid: vastatrix phylloxera. The vineyards were devastated, the aphid was resistant to all attempts at eradication.
In the 20th century, after a period of overproduction, Provence was born in 1977 and organized the AOC Provence.
